Sociological Imagination
Some norms people had in Rome centuries ago was that on celebrations they would overeat. People would eat then throw up and eat again. The reason was to be able to enjoy all the food with no discomfort. At the same time the purpose was to keep their figure as well. They valued their figure because it was important to them and the idea that a skinny body is the ideal, perfect body. A value is culturally defined standards by which people judge desirability, goodness, and beauty, and which serve as broad guidelines for social living as well as public policies something you appreciate and you pay a lot of attention and importance to it to keep it. Three values associated with eating disorders are self-concept (one’s physical body shape), fitting into society, and an escape from problems. These three values serve as foundation for norms and sanctions because they are the reasons why adolescents fall into eating disorders. in Rome centuries ago was that on celebrations they would overeat. People would eat then throw up and eat again. The reason was to be able to enjoy all the food with no discomfort. At the same time the purpose was to keep their figure as well. Norms are restricted rules meant to be followed. Three norm violations on eating disorders are restricting from food. eating a lot, and not purging. All these three violations connect to the value of self-concept because when adolescents are not restricting away from food they detest themselves more than they already did. Meaning they punish themselves by grating food much more. When they are not eating a lot they are not getting rid of all the emotions they feel and all the problems they are going through. Therefore they take action and eat to the point their body can no longer take anymore food. If they don’t purge when they were supposed to they purge until they feel like they have gotten rid of all the food they didn’t vomit out. A sanction is a reward and punishment used to encourage a person to follow norms. A formal sanction would be fitting in the crew and an informal one would be eating whatever they want as a reward for following the rule of purging after eating. Another formal sanction would be fitting into small size clothes and an informal sanction would be punish the person by not being allowed to eat. This sanctions motivate the person to follow norms by motivating them to follow the goal towards getting the ideal body or getting rid of their emotions. If without a goal and motivation, or reward people with eating disorders are not following and give they wouldn’t fit into society, like themselves, and be able to dispose their problems and feelings. Struct rules and good rewards encourage the person to work towards their dream goal. In this case the adolescent can strict from food and eat as much as they want until their body can no longer take more food. They purge for about two hours and then go back to eat. It takes them longer to purge all food out than ingest all possible food. In termination both punishments and rewards end up leaving permanent health issues and mental problems.
