Social Justice Philosophy Erendida
Social justice means to have justice for the world. “Social” is society and “justice” is equal rights, so social justice means equal rights for society. We should have equal rights for everyone no matter if it’s women, senior citizens, or people with different sexual orientations, we should respect everyone in the world no matter if they are from a different place or have a different culture. We should never make someone feel bad because they have a physical problem like if they can’t walk. I see that in this school “social justice” is practiced; I still see social justice in the classes, the teachers help any student, and the students help any other student that needs it. I’ve seen that when a student goes to a teacher for help, the teacher would help them not matter who they are, or what is their race, or what they need help with. The way that I practices social justice outside the school is by helping anyone that needs it, no matter who it is or if they have a problem I will always help anyone who needs it. In the world, people say that they practice Social Justice, but they don’t show it.
Some obstacles that we face as Social Justice are the Essential 7: Respect, Unity, Self Discipline, Excellence, Service, Honesty and ownership, Prompt and prepared. The Essential 7 were an obstacle because this was the first time I ever hear about them; in my old school we never had anything like what we have in this school. I see that we don’t value them as we did before. I see that only some students value them and I say that it’s only a few students because most of the students don’t value the Essential 7. We should start valuing the Essential 7 more, and more students should have more respect for them and students should start to know what they are and what they mean. I feel that not a lot of students know about them mostly the freshmen. The Essential 7 are not thought as they were before. And the students don’t value them as they did before. The students don’t know about the culture in this school and they should know more about that.
Some obstacles that we had before in the school were last year when we had our teachers taken away, our AP classes, and our principal. This was an obstacle because we had new teachers that did not know about our culture and a lot of our AP classes were gone and we need those classes because they help us. When we saw that something was wrong we fought for what was right. Some current obstacles that we face is the respect and the essential 7, I see that respect and the essential 7 is not practice in the school. Only some students still practice respect and the essential 7. A way that I practice the essential 7 is at home. At home I started to be more honest with my parents; I also have more responsibility in the house and in the school and I know that soon that those values would help me in life. And those are the values that they teach as at Social Justice.
My vision for struggle is that we must overcome any struggle that is in front of us and always do our best. Some techniques that we use in Social Justice is that we as students know the struggle that was made to make this school and that the struggle still continues. We also know that we are here to make a better life for ourselves and for the people that we love and to serve our community and transform the world. We as student should know why we are here and how the school was made. Being in Social Justice has taught me more values and also that being is school in important because knowledge is something that no one can ever take away. We students should be proud of the culture we come from and from who we are. We should never believe anyone that tells us that we are not anyone special, because we all are. Before I came to this school I wish that I was from a different culture and that was mostly because I did not know about it. But know I am really proud to be Latina and to come from a beautiful culture.
Something that I have done for my school is last year when we had our march to fight for our teachers, and AP classes. I am happy to know that I was part of that contribution and that I helped bring our teachers and AP classes back. Another one of my roles in the struggle is get educated on the issues around the school so that way I can know if there is anything I can so to help more my school. My fire is eating disorders. I’m really passionate about that problem because that is something that a lot of people girls and boys go, I also through that problem to so I know how hard and painful it is. I still don’t know what I want to do with my life, but I do know that I will use everything I learned in this school to help people that have that same problem.
My issue is eating disorders and this is a social justice issue because eating disorders happen because of social media and social interaction. This has been a problem that is always based in media. The media makes boys and girls think that the only way to be beautiful is if they are skinny. It’s also based on social interaction, based on the people that we are with, sometimes those people tell us that we don’t look good because of our body is not the same as theirs or that we are ugly because we are fat. People of all ages are being experiencing eating disorders and that is mostly because of the social media and social interaction.
